Week 15 October5, 2015

What's gucci everybody!

Well I hate to say it but not much new this week. I'm continuing to see doctors back and forth to Berlin which is 6 hours round trip there and back so that's a bit of a bummer. We're going again tomorrow but we're gonna stay the entire week this time as we have meetings to attend. Gettin real sick of trains.
On a good note... General conference was so GOOD. I'm going to be completely honest I've watched about 5 general conferences now since I've been baptized, but this is the first time where I listened to every single talk word for word as best as I could. I feel like I got SO much more out of it then previous conferences. I challenge everyone when watching conference, close your laptops, leave your phones down, and really listen to what our leaders have to say! It's for our benefit and it's such a blessing to be able to receive counsel from such quorums that are called of God!! I promise if you do this you will get so much more out of conference and receive more blessings as you follow and ACT on the words.
We didn't get to watch all of Sunday conference because of the time schedule which is kind of a bummer... This conference was good but I felt like it talked about women a lot... And marriage... And yeah... Of coarse this isn't a bad thing and maybe it's just me but it just seemed weird to think that I could be married one day not all that far from now. It really made me wonder and think about what I want in a wife.  I have to put in hard work and be on my spiritual game! Then we can put our spiritual games together and be the strongest most devoted members in the church we can possibly be. Also talked about moms! Mom I love you! I'm grateful for you and how you put up with all my crap. Seriously your the best and I mean it.
A talk I really liked was by Richard J. Maynes. Talking about Christ centered lives and comparing it to a wheel in clay class. If the clay is not centered perfectly on the wheel, then slowly the project starts to become dismantled getting worse and worse. I bear witness to this because I was in clay class and did not once make a good flipping bowl on that stupid wheel. If you don't recenter it, it's not going to get any better. If it is centered it can only get better with time and your happiness will be through the roof!! Christ centered life is the best kind of life. And the only kind of life that leads to an eternal one.
I needed this conference. I'm still sick as a dog and it's been hard but I am trying to do every single thing I do with a smile on my face. I know that we can't always control everything that that is thrown at us in life, but something we can control 24/7 is our attitude. And that aspect is huge. I'm so grateful to know I have a team of doctors and people to get me through this. I'm grateful to know I have a loving Heavenly Father that has a plan for me. I don't know what the future holds entirely but I do know that no matter what I will strive everyday for the rest of my life to live a Christ centered life.
I love you all. Don't stress and worry about things and people that don't matter. That's what I learned to do this week. The only person we have to please is God. And we do that with our obedience, love and kindness. Everything else will fall into place.

Always,

Elder Noah Miller

On a less spiritual note... Saw a trailer for Star Wars... Pumped.

Week 14 September 28th, 2015

Hello my family and friends!

Oh what a week it has been. I came to Berlin on Tuesday expecting to only stay a day or two but I am still here hahaha. And it looks like I'll be here a little while longer but I'm not complaining because Berlin is incredible! We're trying to figure out what is wrong with me!! I've stayed at the mission home all week. My president and his family has seriously become a second family to me here. They have been with me every step of the way. It has not been easy being sick so it's a good thing I'm tough;)
This morning I went with doctor Ryser to another doctor and I got more blood drawn. Flashback to the MTC! They couldn't hit a vein in one of my arms so they had to do it again.... And I was as good as gone after that. Out COLD. I passed out. Don't remember much but I woke up with a pillow and blanket and my feet were up on a chair. I thought I was in a spa. I had a couple nurses with me. One was rubbing my head and another was rubbing my arm - they were so nice. After laying down for a while, I got back up and now I'm hanging out at the mission home. Anni and I are about to play some go-fish so I gotta go!
I love you all. I really really do. Thank you to everyone, especially those for the loving messages that they have sent to me - you know who you are:) I'm in a good place right now with the best people. So do not worry about me:)

James 1:3-4 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

We can't get mad if things don't work out the way want them to right away. We have to trust that everything will work out the way it should in the end, and that's exactly what will happen. I know it may be so hard to wait, but patience is the best trait - it really is! I get so pumped when I think of Heavenly Father's plan for me and you should too!! I could just smash my keyboa
ksjwowdndnsnwwjejch isowkdncnj imdjdksendbc ahhhh!!!! God is good!

WEEK 13 SEPTEMBER 21, 2015

Friends and family,

This week has been really really hard, but I know it's not all for nothing. I know Heavenly Father has a plan. Thank you for all the prayers for my family and I, I can feel them and it means more to me than you know. I hope everyone has the best week this week.

I love you all so much.

Week 12 September 14th, 2015

Guten Tag:)

I hope everyone had a great week this past week! Honestly I felt like this entire week didn't exist - it just flew by! Unfortunately I spent some time at the doctors but it's all good cause the doctors here aren't Mormon, so you best believe I take advantage of that:)

Tuesday: Doctors. They examined my head and decided I needed a cat scan or mrt scan or something scan. So we scheduled for that and then the rest of the day was just kind of a blur. I don't really remember what happened.

Wednesday: District meeting! After that I went on an exchange to Rostock with Elder Barton.  We spent the evening just knocking on doors and we met some really nice people but they didn't really want to hear our message. I love Rostock, but it's always just so dang cold and the apartment there never has any food besides tuna so I pretty much just starve for the night every time I go on exchange there.

Thursday: We helped a member set up his kitchen. It's so weird, in Germany when you move, you take your entire kitchen with you. They take the cabinet doors off the hinges, they rip the sink out, take out the oven, the whole 9 yards. Honestly ridiculous but I'm pretty much a handy man now so it's all good. That afternoon we drove back to Schwerin in time for my head scan. It was awful, she had to put a needle in my arm during the entire scan! At the beginning when she first put it in, I thought a fly landed on my arm or something so I looked down but no fly, just lots of arm blood splattered and I freaked out a little bit. I might have let out a little sigh/scream/whimper... Idk the nurse just said "All ist gut Elda Milla All ist gut!!" because German's can't say their R's. Anyway, I have another appointment tomorrow so hopefully they will be able to tell what's wrong with me.

Friday: Normal Friday. Had a good English class. We do weekly planning on Fridays so we made new goals for our investigators and planned what we are going to do next with them.

Saturday: We went to Dellingsdorf which is about 2 hours west, for a zone meeting. We talked about getting new members to the temple and family history work. We drive on the autobahn to get there and that's always frightening because Germans can't drive as it is and now all of them are going 120mph. We were suppose to have a lesson with Enrico but we had to move it to Sunday.

Sunday: Kirche of course. While waiting for Enrico in the middle of the city this guy who was absolutely wasted came up to me and got all up in my face. He smelt so bad and honestly I was a little scared. He didn't say a word. He just stared at me really close a for solid 10 long seconds. I couldn't help it, all of a sudden I just busted out laughing, which made me even more scared because I thought he was gonna hit me. He eventually left and made his way over to start a conversation with a statue near by.  Anyway, later finally our first lesson with Enrico! He is seriously the coolest dude, and a super nice guy. He was asking questions on questions on questions and he liked all the answers we gave him. I can totally see him getting dunked in the near future:)

2NE 2:24 But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things.
You are not alone, he knows what's going on. trust his plan:)

WEEK 11 SEPTEMBER 7TH, 2015

Hallo!

It was a very very cold and windy week here in Deutschland with lots of rain! I knew it was going to be cold but I didn't know this early! I've already busted out my winter clothes and it's barely September. I'm scared for winter!
Anyway, unfortunately not much this week. It was weird, I felt like we were so so busy but not much got done. We had training in Berlin which was good. What's even better was they made tacos for lunch...Tears of joy for tacos! I didn't know they had those here, apparently it's rare, and only in certain stores. It was good to see all my buds from the MTC again too.
As far as our investigators, Jannick is still solid, we just can't get it through his head why he must be baptized. We've shared every scripture and have stated every reason why it's important but he still
doesn't understand. We're a little lost with what to do with him. Lee is ready and willing but only wants to be baptized with his friend Josh. Josh was ready, but now the problem is, he says our church has too many rules and doesn't know anymore. Ay Yai Yaiii!
Beyond all that, somethink really cool happened on Sunday. I would call it a miracle cause this doesn't just happen. A man named Enrico walked in and Elder Hein and I saw him and we went up and talked to him. He said he had driven by the other day and was curious so he called, found out what time church started, and ended up staying the entire 3 hours! We asked him if he wanted to learn more and take lessons but he said he didn't know and he would have to check his work schedule. We were kinda bummed cause we thought he wouldn't call back for sure but he did! He seems super interested. I'm pumped for him!
Each week I find myself getting more accustomed to the culture here in Germany. The language is coming and my faith is growing.

I love you all so much! Keep up the grind! Shout out to all my Devils and Cougs who started school this week :)

WEEK 10 SEPTEMBER 1, 2015

Hi family:)

I can't believe I've been in Germany for a month! Everything about this week was pretty solid. Even the language. But German is so hard. Sometimes I just wanna cry. People who went on missions always said "yeah ya know the first few months are hard learning a language!" And I would just brush it off and say to myself ehh.. it won't be that bad. Ohhh was I wrong and ohh is it bad. You really don't understand how hard it is until you live it. It's rough. That being said, looking back a month ago to now, I have learned so much. I may not be fluent yet ;) but it's actually really cool that I can communicate and get by with people here. Even if it is just a little bit. I can understand a lot, the hard part is speaking the correct grammar. It's weird, I can't think and translate the word order to how I would say it in English first otherwise it doesn't make sense. I have to talk like Yoda when I speak German. Example: Ich habe mein Mission in Deutschland gedient = I served my mission in Germany. But the exact English translation is: I my mission in Germany served. Total freakin Yoda status.
Anyways! Tuesday we traveled to Berlin because Elder Hein and I had interviews with President Fingerle just to see how we are doing so far. That took all day and we got back late so nothing much happened other than that.
Wednesday we had a district meeting. We have 6 Elders in our district. Just Elder Hein and I are here in Schwerin and then 4 other missionaries are north in Rostock. After our meeting we had an exchange so I packed a bag and went up to Rostock for the day and night with Elder Spencer. It was a lot of fun. It's a cool city and it's the area in the Berlin mission with the ocean! During my exchange we had an appointment with a girl named Olivia who is 17 and her mom Hyemi. They are Chinese or Japanese - I can't tell which. Anyway, Olivia doesn't know if she believes in God or not and Hyemi is Christian. We killed it with Olivia - she is reading all of her assignments and praying because she wants to know if God is there, but Hyemi is a little bit more difficult. She is pretty content with how things are for her right now so as far as she goes, it just means we are going to have to work extra hard!
Thursday we drove back down to Schwerin and I was back with Elder Hein. We had English class again which I still love. I'll try and include a funny video I got. We had them practice having a conversation and at the end Dieter (a guy who comes to English class) stops for a second, looks at his notes, looks up and says "to shake!" He wanted to end it and shake the other guys hand - it was so funny!
Friday ohhh Meine Gute.. We started out with a service project. I don't really know how to explain it, but we spread rocks in a members yard. There was a huuuggee pile of rocks that Elder Hein and I had to shovel into our wheelbarrows, take it about 50 yards, dump it, spread it and then head back to the pile and do the exact same thing. Now I don't know if any of you have tried to shovel rocks before but it is So. Hard. We did that from about 9 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon. Still can't feel my arms. We went back to the apartment, showered up and then went to go do some finding. I decided I needed to step it up a bit and take the lead and try to stop people on the street this time because Elder Hein has been doing it the past month! I gave it a shot! The first couple people didn't stop for me but the third time is a charm! My man who came to be known as Miguel from Mexico City stopped and wants to hear more from us:) He's the nicest guy. A little later we stopped another guy. We think he is in the Armenian mob because he said some strange stuff and had some interesting stories. He has 3 phones and has to change their numbers every month which was a little scary at first but then he's like "ohh man yeah I know you guys, you guys are the Mormons. I love the Mormons!!" So that was good. All of a sudden it started to downpour. We got absolutely drenched and it was cold.
Saturday not much to report on. We played our usual soccer and some new guys came. They were big and they were hairy and they were pretty good actually. They were from Afghanistan and all super nice. That's really common here. I've met a lot of people from the Middle East as immigrants because their villages were invaded by Isis or another group and Germany takes them in.
Sunday,  church was good. We had dinner at the Nuendorg's who are currently remodeling their mansion. It is gigantic. The only bad thing is they live in the middle of nowhere so it takes a long time to get there and get back.
With all that, I think this week was one of the more enjoyable weeks of my mission. Sometimes I look back and I get a little mad at myself, I feel like I was kind of a punk back home. Nothing big, just a little ungrateful and I took a lot of things for granted. Don't be or do either of those things! Count your many blessings:) I want to leave a quote with you all that my roommate Will, back in Hawaii, wrote me when I was having a little bit of a hard time.

"God doesn't care nearly as much about where you have been as he does about where you are and, with his help where you are willing to go." -Jeffrey R. Holland

PS: Please keep my friend Kade in your prayers! I played soccer with Kade at BYU-Hawaii and he is currently serving a mission in Thailand but he got hurt and he has no recollection of the past 7 months. Thank you!

WEEK 9 AUGUST 24th, 2015

Wie gehts fam!

First off, I would just like to wish my wonderful Momma a happy birthday! I wish I could celebrate with you but I am there in spirit and hope you had the best day:)

Anyways just another faaantastic week here in Deutschland. I'm ready for August to end. Not my favorite month of the year!

Allrightty well we started this week out with a bang! Tuesday evening we decided to go for a run. Elder Hein was waiting for me outside and as I came out and shut the door he says "you got the keys right?" I most definitely did not have the keys. Thus we were locked out of our apartment. To make a long story short, hours later we got ahold of a phone and called a lock pick dude and he got us in but charged us 120 euros. Then another lock pick dude showed up a little later and he wanted 90 euros for just showing up!! The thing was Elder Hein called two but the first guy said he couldn't come for 2 hours so he called another and he could come right away. He called and cancelled the first one and that guy still showed up. We told him we wouldn't pay him. He said fine, I will send a bill and then if you don't pay that the law will come after you! We just said okay. It was 12:30 a.m. and we just wanted to sleep. We couldn't have payed if we wanted to because the last guy took every last euro we had. We're just missionaries for petes sake.

Anyway, on Thursday. We got to go to Berlin for a mission conference. Berlin is the coolest and it was so fun to be with a bunch of other elders. We got to walk around the city for a little while before our train came.

Friday was the best! Elder Hein and I taught an English class at the church and lots of people came! A couple of them were just people we talked to in the street and didn't think they would come but they did. It's so funny and great to see them try so hard to learn. After, we had a ping pong tournament. So Nick if you thought you were gonna get the upper hand on me while I'm gone, you can think again;)

We're gonna have to push Lee's baptism back a week because he wants to do it at the same time as his friend Josh but Josh has been sick all week so we need to get him caught up to where Lee is at. We're having good lessons with some other people as well that I'm pretty stoked about!

We took out bikes for the first time hahah! It was fun but we're not doing it again. That's pretty much all the big news for this week.

My faith and patience have been tested these past few days. It was a little bit of a tough week but that just means I have to work harder. Not that Elder Hein and I don't absolutely work our tails off everyday, but to receive what we desire, we have to work extremely hard. We have to be willing to work harder than anyone else. That's how it is in the mission and long after the mission. Hard work is a trait that is essential for success. I believe my mission is and will continue to throw everything at me to prepare me for life.

Weekly struggles:

Locked out of our apartment...

Weekly triumphs:

My money managing skills since being locked out and losing €120 to the locksmith.

I miss you all a whole lot.

Mit liebe,

Elder Miller

Me and Andreas

Bikes were fun but too hilly and too crowded!

WEEK 8 AUGUST, 18th 2015

Hi family!

It's been a good second week here in Schwerin! Nobody works as hard as Elder Hein and I:) Hah and I thought I was tired at the MTC all the time... We walk for daayyyss. We have bikes but ehhh. We take trains and buses. Anytime I hop on a train or bus you can best bet that I'll be out cold in less than 2 minutes. Hahah Elder Hein says the same thing every time to wake me up " Elder Miller wakey wakeyyy this is our stop!" Anyways, nothing too crazy this week but some exciting things!
Found a couple new investigators this week which is awesome. It's a little difficult to find new people to teach. The members in Germany don't really like to help too much with that stuff as far as talking about the gospel with their friends. So that's why we have to do more street contacting than we would like. We just don't get that many references.
Big time news for Lee: He hasn't smoked or drank for 4 consecutive weeks!  I love that guy:) We pray hard that he stays strong because he finally committed to being baptized! We got him set up for the 28th of this month! Hahah he says were only allowed to have 6 people come to his baptism though because he is "shy". We kinda jokingly argued with him and said there's no way that's possible because there will be a lot of people that want to come and support him but we finally caved and just said fine. That includes him, Elder Hein & I, and the bishop so we get to invite 2 people. I'm pretty sure there will be quite a few more people than 6 but we will see what happens with that I guess.
It's Holiday here in Germany so a lot of people are gone on vacation. But they should be back in a couple weeks! That means a little more study time. We study for at least 4 hours a day... and that's minimum. I learn so much. Kinda makes me sick because it makes me think if I would have studied this hard and well back in school I would have a full freakin ride to Harvard. Makes me excited for when I get back home and go to school and actually apply myself. Anyways, the more and more I read the Book of Mormon and the Bible the more true it gets. Anyone who doubts it, just read for yourself. The ACTUAL scriptures. Don't Google anything or use the Internet and find someone else's silly, ignorant, anti Mormon website and use that as reference to disprove... Seriously. That's ridiculous. And that happens too much. Develop your OWN opinions. The bible and Book of Mormon testify of one another!

Ezekiel 37:16-17: Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, for Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, for Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions. And join them one to another into one stick: and they shall become one in thine hand.

Weekly difficulties:

The German language. I was about ready to rip up my language book and throw it out my apartment window the other day I was getting so frustrated.

Had some gnarly headaches this week too - that's not fun either.

Everyone and their dog smokes here. It's really really bad. I don't know if I'm gonna make it home before I die of second hand smoke.

Weekly triumphs:

Lee!!!

Played soccer this week. Yeah, I still got it;)

I love you all so much and miss you! The mission is hard. It's really really hard. But I think that's one of the reasons why I love it. I wanna send some packages home with some stuff I just can't yet because it's balls hot. But it is cooling! So hopefully soon.

Keep on keepin on,

Elder Miller

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!

1. WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE IN GERMANY?

There are a lot of different things. There is something called döner that I love! It is a kind of a sandwich and is made with beef. Pretzels from bakeries!

WHAT IS YOUR AREA LIKE?

Our area is super big! It is beautiful here. We see the castle all the time! The streets are very crowded which is why we don't ride bikes.

Week Deutschland!

Hi guys:)

I am finally in the wunderbar country of Deutschland! I honestly don't even know where to start. It's so beautiful here. Beyond beautiful. The trees, the houses, the ports. everything. I absolutely love it. This week has been nuts so I'm just going to fast forward to Tuesday when we left the MTC.

Sooo we left at 6 in the morning blah blah blah, 3 flights and 20 hours later we arrive in Berlin. We get to baggage claim and I wait a while and only one of my bags comes through. Suddenly the conveyer belt shuts off. I turn around and I notice 6 other missionaries hadn't yet got their bags either. To make a long story short I guess AirFrance didn't feel like putting 12 of our bags on the flight with us. Some got no bags,  I was lucky to get one. Unfortunately, it was my winter suitcase they decided to send so... Heavy coats and thermals aren't really my choice clothing for the summer. Needless to say, I've been wearing the same sweaty white shirt, socks and suit the past 4 days,  EWWW! Luckily that suitcase had a couple extra pairs of garments so its bearable. Anyway, for the fun part, Präsident Fingerle picked us up in a Mercedes bus and took us to a town called Radeberg. He took us to the exact spot where Thomas S. Monson dedicated the land of East Germany during the division in 1985. It was way cool. After that he surprised us and took us to the Freiburg Temple! It's under Renovation and they are expanding it but it was still so amazing. We even got to go inside. Since the Freiburg temple was one of the only temples in Eastern Europe, they have a hotel right on the temple grounds owned by the church so that people who came from far away had a place to stay. So we literally got to spend the night at the temple! Like I said, it's normally closed but they opened it up specially just for us:)

Thursday: We got assigned our new companions! Mine is Elder Hein from Cedar City Utah. He's a stud. He just got released as a zone leader before being assigned to be my trainer. He's been out for a year and a half. I'm serving with him in a town kinda way up north called Schwerin. It takes 6 hours by train to get there from where we were previously in Freiburg and one of our trains was late. If we took it we wouldn't have gotten back to our apartment until at least midnight so we stopped half way and spent the night in Berlin with the AP's. This was way fun because they have a car and a really nice big apartment:)

Friday: We all woke up at 6 and went to play soccer at a nearby field. It was great - the field was so nice! Except I was sucking wind and about a measly five minutes in I was dying. After that we went back, showered and Elder Hein and I got on the train to Schwerin for real this time. We got there about 12:30, went grocery shopping and planned. Elder Hein gave me a rundown of all the investigators. I'm walking into an area where they have FIVE baptismal dates. 4 are strong! We are unsure about the commitment of one but we still expect to baptize all 5:) That just means I gotta step my game up a bit:) Germany Berlin Mission ---> GBM ---> Greatest baptizing mission. It's true. Later we went and street contacted but nobody was really feelin' us.

Saturday: There's a park right next to our apartment and Elder Hein took me through one of his work outs. It was a lil rough but all good. After that we headed out for my first real appointment ever! His name is Jannick and he's the coolest dude. He's 25 and he believes everything in the Book of Mormon and he believes all of the principles of the church except baptism. He says he's just interested in following Christ and doesn't know why he needs to do the action of being baptized. We tried explaining the gift of the Holy Ghost and how it is making a special covenant when you are baptized but we weren't getting through to him so we need to figure something out. We will keep working:) After that we had dinner at a members home and I would be lying if I told you I had a clue of what happened or what was said. They all spoke SO fast so I just ate my chicken and nodded and smiled at everything.. And last but not least I met my favorite people so far. Josh and Lee. They are the funniest college guys you will ever meet. They are from China and speak English but with a very heavy accent and mix up their words sometimes. They are reading the Book of Mormon and Lee believes it but Josh says he is still asking God to know if it's true!

Sunday: I had to introduce myself to the ward. They were all laughing at one point so I must have said something wrong because I didn't have any funny lines in my talk... But everyone is so nice. We have about 50 members in the ward and they are all really strong. The next closest meeting building is in a town called Rostock which is an hour away so many of these people travel a long way to come to church.

Weekly struggles:

Russell M. Nelson of the 12 spoke at the MTC the day we left. I was there for 6 weeks and didn't get to hear one apostle speak - July is apostle vacation month I guess.

I don't get my bag until Thursday. Kinda need that now. It will be 9 days.

Got a haircut the day before I left for Germany. I asked for just a light trim and the next thing I know she's buzzin it all off. I blame myself for that one....

Weekly triumphs:

Monday: First P-day!

Our apartment is totes rad and clean!

My first week here has been great. I am so blessed to have been called to this beautiful country. The people are so great. I can't understand or speak very well in German, but when you have the language of the spirit down that's all you need:) Sorry this email is so long. I'm done! Oh but one more thing I got my new address and I love to receive letters:) Soo..

We, along with your son, appreciate the support which you give through your weekly letters and daily prayers in his behalf. Thank you for raising your son so that he can be part of this amazing work.

For a glimpse inside the mission, including occasional pictures of your missionary, you can check the blog we maintain at http://germanyberlinmission2015-18.blogspot.com.  I’ve included a picture of Elder Miller, his companion, Elder Hein, Sister Fingerle, and me.

May the Lord bless you in all that you do.

Sincerely,

Christian H. Fingerle, President
